Clifton 4th Beach

Clifton 4th Beach

Clifton 4th Beach

Clifton is known as one of the affluent areas in Cape Town, it has spectacular views over the Atlantic Ocean. The popular Clifton Beaches are made up of four coves of pristine white sand and separated by giant granite boulders, protecting the coves from summers south easterly winds. Clifton 4th Beach holds the Blue Flag status and is by far the most popular of the four beaches.

Each of the four beaches has its own character and holds a different experience. The Clifton 1st Beach, overlooked by the exclusive beachfront apartments and great views, is generally known to be one of the quieter beaches of the four. Great for the locals and the older generation just looking to kick their feet up and enjoy the sights. Clifton 2nd Beach is also one of the quieter beaches and great for a quick swim and sun, not having to worry too much about what everyone thinks of your swanky cozy! Clifton 3rd Beach is a popular beach for the 20 somethings and is known for its gay community frequenting this beach. Clifton 4th beach is great for families and is the most vibrant of the four beaches.

Enjoy the cool clear blue water lapping onto the soft white sand and amazing views of the Atlantic Ocean dotted with yachts anchored just off the shoreline. Usually packed with beach goers, you are bound to enjoy the sites and great vibe happening. Cape Town’s Summers is always the best time to hit the beaches, the Clifton Beaches attract sun lovers from all over the world. On windy days, Clifton 2nd and 3rd beaches are found to be largely unaffected by the wind. Because of Cape Town’s extended daylight hours in Summer, the beaches remain warm as late as 6:30pm and only gets darker much later. Warmest months is from October to April.

What to do

The Clifton Beaches can be found less than 5km from Cape Town’s city centre, parking is scarce during the summer period, so probably best to catch a taxi. During the day, enjoy sunbathing and taking a quick refreshing dip every now and then. The popular beach sports at Clifton include Volleyball, Touch Rugby, Frisbee and Beach Tennis. Deck chairs and umbrellas are available for rental and professional massages are offered during weekends in the summer months. For the ultimate experience though, head down in the late afternoon for a sunset picnic. Pack your blanket and light meals (no alcohol), blanket and candles. Share the most amazing sunset and take in the festive vibe with friends and family. Just pack light, the stairs are a killer as they are long and steep! Vendors walk around offering refreshments and treats, which helps, so make sure you have cash. If you are feeling brave, the 1st Sunday of every month is a swim usually starting around 9:00am from September to April and 10:00am from June to August. Clifton 4th Beach is often open to free evening events such as music and short local films.

In the area

Above the beaches, the road is lined with cafes, restaurants and a few grocery stores, making lunch time breaks a must. Further along the coast, you find other great beaches like family friendly Camps Bay Beach. Camps Bay also boasts several world-class restaurants, bars and night clubs. Let’s not forget about the exclusive Llandudno Beach, by far one of the most beautiful beaches and great for evening sundowners. Clifton hosts luxury accommodation with amazing hotels and my favourite, self-service flats such as Clifton Breeze, 206 First Beach, and Sea Haven right on the beach front. If you have a smaller budget, consider staying at a backpackers in the city centre.
