Geological Contact Zone

Geological Contact Zone

The Geological Contact Zone dates back to 1836 when Charles Darwin visited this exact location. This visit had a major impact on Charle's thoughts on the origin of rocks.

From Sea Point, one can clearly see the hot magma intruding into Malmesbury Group shale. The late-Precambrian age Malmesbury Group is the oldest rock formation in the area, consisting of a mere 150m coastline of alternating layers of dark grey fine-grained greywacke, sandstone and slate, seen along a rocky Sea Point and Bloubergstrand shorelines, and from the Strand to Gordon's Bay.

The coastal areas where Malmesbury group rocks are exposed are Robben Island, Green Point to Sea Point, Gordons Bay and Blousteen (between Koeelbay and Rooi Els).
