Best for: family fun, safe swimming, lots of activities

Strand originated some 200 years ago as the prime holiday and fishing resort. The main attraction is The Strand (beach), some 5km of pure white sand and warmer water of the False Bay. The main beach called Melkbaai (Milk Bay), is reportedly one of the safest swimming areas in the country. The Strand also has a kiosk, tidal pool and boat launching facilities. Strand Beach can be found on the Eastern shores along False Bay, approximately 50km outside from Cape Town along Beach Road with ample parking.

What to do

Doesn’t matter what you are in the mood for, The Strand has it all for you. Hire beach chairs and umbrellas to get out of the sun and relax, supplied from the local beach vendors, they also walk around and sell items such as cold drinks, pre-packed food, and ice-cream. A promenade featuring a mix of restaurants, cafés and shops follow the shoreline. Surfing is a strong culture at the Strand and surfers frequent the beach due to the amazing surf spots along the shore, “The Pipe” is a specially designated surfing area, famous for its good waves. The waves are also safe for beginners and the young ones as the surf is generally not too strong. Many of the surfing spots are quite far from shore, but worth the swim. Here are all the best spots, AECI, Blinkklip, Pipe, Duckies, Reef, Silkies, Die Poort and Greenways.

Apart from swimming in the ocean, the Strand also has an Olympic-sized, heated swimming pool which is open to the public throughout the year. Between the Lourens River mouth and Rooi Els, there are numerous fishing spots, and the clear waters attract many diving enthusiasts. The Strand has a long list of activities to do along this long stretch of sand, namely swimming in the sea and tidal pool, windsurfing, paddle surfing, body boarding, picnicking, walking your dogs, kayaking, volleyball, fishing and boat launching.

In the Area

If the beach gets a bit much for the kids, head on over to Dune Park and play a round of mini golf or utilise the super tube. There is also the Harmony Park that features a huge tidal pool. Looking for something a little sportier? There is a wide variety of organised sport available, including an internationally rated golf course, tennis courts, rugby fields, squash clubs and fun water sports such as board sailing, power-boating, and paddle-skiing.

Strand offers a wide variety of restaurants guaranteed to appease even the most selective palate. The choice of shopping facilities is similar - from the comprehensive Somerset Mall situated just outside the town to the local Dorpsmeent Centre, one would be hard-pressed to find a service which is not locally available.

Strand accommodates most of your accommodation requirements with three caravan and camping sites, one with chalets, tent sites, numerous bed and breakfast facilities and a top class RCI Timeshare and hotel on the beach front with conference facilities, but not forgetting good honest family accommodation.
