Helderberg Winery

The Helderberg - named for its beauty, and meaning Clear or Bright Mountain - rises majestically above the sweeping False Bay

Around this mountain, farmers have planted vines for centuries, discovering that its soils and proximity to the ocean area ideal for the cultivation of premium grapes. In 1906, the Helderberg Winery was established and in that year harvested the first grapes in their new winery on the slopes of the Helderberg. Over the following decades, the winery grew in stature, based on its pedigree of consistently producing excellent red wines, with notably superb cabernet sauvignon. The winery was instrumental in establishing the areas reputation and high regards, and today the Helderberg is widely acknowledged as South Africa's home of fine red wines.

Helderberg Winery - Wine Makers Comments

Cabernet Sauvignon 2013: This harvest was of exceptional high quality and the berries ripened in very favourable cool climatic conditions. Components of this wine were hand-picked in the Helderberg ward of the Stellenbosch region, South Africa's benchmark red wine production area, and then vinified separately. After cold maceration (for optimal extraction of colour, flavour and tannins) the primary fermentation was started with a selected native yeast. Remontage (depending on the phenolic ripeness of the batch) was done 3 times per day for just under 2 weeks. The wine was French oak matured, of which 30% was in new barriques and 70% in older barriques.

Tasting Notes - The Helderberg Winery Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 displays aromas of blackcurrent, dark plums, red berries, light lead pencil whiffs and hints of fynbos. The dense layer of pure and complex fruit, with subtle cedar undertones, is held together by a firm and well balanced acidity. On the palate the wine exhibits a great balance of ripe fruit character with an elegant, structured and silky finish.

Sauvignon Blanc 2014: This harvest, like the 2013, delivered a crop of exceptionally high quality berries. With vines growing in close proximity to the ocean on oak-leaf soils, a wet 2013 winter and a cool ripening period resulted in berries showing beautiful varietal characteristics. We handpicked the grapes to minimise oxidation at 22 degrees B, fermentation took place at low temperatures and reductive winemaking practices were followed to ensure a wine that is naturally well balanced, and retaining as much of the varietal character as possible.

Tasting Notes - The Helderberg Winery Sauvignon Blanc 2014 displays a lovely spectrum of cool climate characteristics such as grapefruit, green figs, cut grass, gooseberries and citrus. A rich pallet exudes layers of pure fruit with a firm acidity and this results in a wine of vibrant intensity, elegance and is thoroughly refreshing.
