Green Point Lighthouse

Green Point Lighthouse

The Green Point Lighthouse was first lit in 1824, and was also the first solid lighthouse built on the South African coastline. The lighthouse is still in operation which therefore makes it the oldest working lighthouse in South Africa.

The lighthouse initially used a petroleum lantern but in 1922 it was upgraded to electrical, which increased the beam range from 6 to 25 nautical miles.

The Green Point Lighthouse is a red striped lighthouse and national monument, and is nicknamed the Moaning Minnie.
