History behind it:
The Pipe Track was built in 1887 to service the pipeline that brought water from the Disa River, on Table Mountain's Back Table, through the mountain via the Woodhead tunnel, to Slangolie Ravine and eventually to the Molteno Reservoir in the city. Even before that there was a small path between Kloof Nek and Kasteelspoort, the easiest route up the mountain from the Camp's Bay Side.
Best time to go:
This is an easy hike so no problems here, for safety purposes take a friend.
Named after the pipes that ran water from the reservoirs on top of Table Mountain, now a popular running/ hiking trail, this trail holds amazing views and is quite easy to navigate. Situated below the Twelve Apostilles overlooking Camps Bay, take the time to enjoy nature within the Mother City.
Starting from the lower parking lot of Table Mountain, this track is clearly marked and starts with wide steps taking you to the right of Table Mountain. The Pipe Track runs along the Camps Bay side and is generally quite flat, perfect for first timers and children. Because of the ease of this track and how close it is to Cape Town and Camps Bay, the track is popular in the afternoon and evenings. The Pipe Track is unique as it runs on for most of the mountain, giving hikers a choice as to how long they wish to go for. If you are looking for more of a challenge, once you passed the cove/ cave, you will find tracks shooting straight up [name of ravines] to the back of Table Mountain. From here you can extend your hike to the top of Table Mountain and head down to the Reservoirs and further.
What to Take:
If you doing a short hike along the Pipe Track, all you will need is some water to keep hydrated and maybe a camera if it's your first time!
